The Meseta

In the past week we have covered a lot of ground! In fact, we are now half way to Santiago and feeling quite accomplished!

Last Tuesday we were in the city of Burgos and had the opportunity to be tourists for an afternoon. It was great! We drank coffee and ate lunch in the plaza - lots of people-watching, with the very large cathedral in the background. We also toured the cathedral and went to a mass for Pilgrims in one of the very lovely chapels.

After Burgos, we were on the Meseta, or "table land". It´s relatively flat, but not like our prairies. It´s noticably drier here, and the sun gets hot in the afternoon. Lots of grain farming here, and the fields are much bigger and wider. The first crop of hay has been cut; the colours have changed from spring greens to more summer greens and golds. The land is "scrubbier", there is more irrigation and, generally, things look less fertile. We´ve moved from the province of Burgos to the province of Palencia, where there are more houses built with bricks rather than stone.

We´re doing well. We generally get up earlier to walk in the cool of the morning. In the first picture, we turned around to see the town of Casrojeriz in the sunrise. In the other picture we are enjoying a bocadilla for lunch - lunch happens after cafe con leche, whenever we are next hungry.

We are currently in the small town of Ledigos and we are making plans for arriving in the city of Leon, about four days from now. The weather has continued to be amazing - sunny, and enough breeze for an enjoyable walk, provided we don´t continue into siesta time in the afternoon - about 2pm.

Thanks again for your comments, we enjoy hearing from you.

Alice and Claire: This is better than any book I have read on the Camino de Santiago. You both sound like seasoned walkers now. So happy to hear weather, etc. is going well. Continue to pray for you both. Alex and Jim

  3. Great to see today's posting after getting back from Ottawa. We checked while at the Cloutiers' this morning-having breakfast with Joe.
The pictures and your descriptions are gorgeous. Will be thinking of you and hoping the good weather and food continue to make your journey perfect.

  4. Hi Alice and Claire, I am following your blog with great interest. It's bringing back such good memories of my own Camino. I've stayed in some of the albergues that you've stayed in-Ronscevalles of course, Pamplona (the people were so nice), Villamajor de Monjardin (that one was like a resort-such a great view). You are doing so well; I can tell from the smiles on your faces! You are over halfway to Santiago-that's fantastic! You are now in the meseta which for me was the most memorable place due to the community spirit at some of the albergues, the hardiness of my fellow pilgrims, and the different terrain. I have a similar picture of the view to Castrojeriz from the top of the big hill but the countryside was browner after the harvest in the fall. Your pictures show a greener, more lush area. I just loved the picture of the wildflowers-lovely!One albergue along the meseta that had great community spirit was the parochial Casa rectoral at Bercianos del Camino. The pilgrims helped prepare supper, then we had a great dinner and a very meaningful prayer service afterwards. The lady who volunteered there also made bracelets which she sold to help with the costs of running the hostel. Anyway, I'm so glad that you are enjoying your Camino experience. I'll continue to pray for you. God bless you and keep you in His care.

  5. Alice and Claire-
I am very interested in your progress and am amazed at the apparent ease in which you are mastering this challenge. You are making me feel old and very unfit!!Your photos are lovely. Very best wishes for continued good health and weather.

  6. Hi, Claire, best wishes and kind regards. Don gave me the link to your blog before I left on sabbatical, and I want to say that I am very happy for you about your pilgrimmage and wish you God's rich blessing as you walk and talk and explore and reflect and meditate. I myself am already coming up with very unexpected and unique insights into my life after only the first week of the sabbatical already! I hope all your dreams and expectations from this journey will come true for you, and I wish you the very best, Pastor Nick

  7. You can feel right at home there or here - rain for two days now! and a bit cooler. Gardens are BURSTING with life. Continuing with prayers... love the blogs... and with the rain, sunshine must be right around the corner... xoxo Alex
