Leon and 300 km to go!

So, about all of that good weather we´ve been writing about - it´s over for now. We´ve now had a chance to experience the Camino in the rain. We´ve had two days of the real thing and a couple of overcast and drizzly days. Rain makes for a very different kind of day. We prepare our packs with rain covers and wear lots more clothes, including rain jackets and gloves, since the temperatures have been much cooler - about 9 degrees. It´s also been noticably windier. The walking, however, has still been pleasant. When we stop for a break, we bring all of our wet gear into the bar, hoping for a nice warm cafe con leche and a chance to dry out a bit. At the end of the day we stuff our boots with newspapers to help dry them out (contrary to advertising, goretex is not waterproof) and the dormitory is filled with drying jackets, ponchos, rain pants, etc.

Yesterday we walked into the city of Leon and had the afternoon to look around. We saw the Gaudi building - very lovely (that´s it in the picture), and the cathedral - spectacular. Just walking around was interesting - lots of winding, old streets and inviting plazas. Unfortunately we had to walk very quickly since it was raining and very wet.

In Leon we stayed at the Benedictine Monastery for the night. We´ve stayed at a few of these now. Generally the facilites are limited and there is no charge, other than a request for a donation. In the evening there is usually a vespers service in the church with the nuns. It´s lovely to attend and enjoy the music, though we really don´t understand a word.

The rain has given us new appreciation for certain things about the Pilgrim experience. Our particularly happy moments include:
- energy snacks during the day - nuts, dried fruit and especially chocolate
- coffee stops - the usual cafe con leche with those delicious Spanish pastries
- seeing our destination for the day on the horizon
- a hot shower
- checking in with people we´ve met before on the Camino
- dry socks and boots
- hearty Pilgrim meals with the always available red wine
- good weather for drying laundry.

We´ve done about 500 km to date and have approximately 300 to go. Spanish distance signs are notoriously inconsistent. Our map book says 297 km to go, however the sign on our albergue today says 319... Regardless, we are making good progress and are continuing to enjoy all of the various different aspects of the journey. Each day is a new adventure.

  1. Hi Mom and Claire,

I am still enjoying hearing about your adventures. Keep up the blogging. It is good that you are getting to experience all the weather that the Camino has to offer. It would have been such a shame if it had been beautiful and sunny the whole time.

    Happy hiking.

  2. Jonathan,

Having walked the Camino and had my share of cold wet weather, I would say a couple of days of that to get the experience of all weather on the Camino is enough. Alice and Claire, continue to enjoy. Bueno Camino!

  3. Love the pictures. Hope you don't have too many rainy days - I'm sure the country side needs it.
Keep up the good work. Can't believe you have been walking for 25 days.

  4. Dear Alice and Claire

Just because we may not have posted for a couple of weeks does not mean that we haven't been waiting for each of your wonderful blogs with great anticipation. When you set up your franchise for bells on the bikes in Spain, send us details so we can us the same methods to get Melbourne bike riders to use their bells!

We thought of you both tonight at Mass when the priest announced that the youth group was having an ice skating night, but that he and the PP would not be skating as "we are both too old" ... at 40 and 46! I will have to refer them both to your blog.

You are an inspiration to us here in Melbourne at the start of our winter - we can't wait for the book, or at least an expanded journal with many pictures when the epic adventure ends.

    Love from John and Margot

  5. Showers of blessings! It sure sounds as if you are well prepared for any weather. It would have been a shame if you had taken all this gear along and not had a chance to try it out!
To hear a vespers service... How wonderful. Your hearts and souls absorbed the music even if your mind didn't understand. What a gift. Thinking of you lots and lots and prayers for everything you need and more.
    much love from Marg

  7. Claire and Alice, it has been a pleasure to watch over your shoulder as you complete your awesome walk. Thanks for taking the time to post. It must be very satisfying to dig deep with in each day and realize your success each night. To have had the opportunity to meet such a variety of people must be entertaining too! I am looking forward to seeing the whole slide show and hearing all of the stories when you arrive home. Continue to enjoy, love Sandra

  9. Hi Claire,

Don just forwarded me the link after I sent off an email to my address list for our local ski club to vote for a competition. Anyways, that's not the point. I am so thrilled to see that you're out hiking with your friend Alice and cherishing life on the Camino. That's awesome! I'm living in Golden BC now, quite far away from Toronto, hence we haven't seen each other in a long time. I think the last time was when my parents Helen & Theo were visiting in Ontario/Quebec. Well, I wish you happy trails with wonderful encounters and many grateful moments. Cheers,
    Sanne van der Ros

  12. Hi Claire & Alice,
We are so inspired by you both.....your drive, ambition, and determination to take and succeed in this life-changing journey of hope and spiritual reawakening. WOW, we remain two of your biggest cheerleaders.
We chuckled at some of the comments, loved your pictures and are definitely thinking about the business possibilities. Bike bells, shower hooks, and instant clothes dryers......hmmm???? (just teasing).
Looking forward to your safe return home.
Take care, you're in our thoughts and prayers,
    Much love, Tony & Nancy.

  13. Hello Alice and Claire,
Your journey is over 50% completed!!! Bravo!! I am so very inspired by your voyage. We wish you more sunny days than rainy ones. I am sure you have made many wonderful discoveries about yourselves and human kind in general as you chat with people you encounter along this pilgrimage.
We wish you continued good health as you head towards your goal and the finish line. Your journey is so much more than the 8ookm. You are making a difference on this planet and inspiring hope in others as you raise funds for Parkinson's and step outside your comfort zones to accomplish this amazing trek.
    God Bless, Maureen and family
